My Pregnancy: Week 35

Happy Birthday to me!  I'm 31 today and I'm pretty sure this year is going to be one I'll never forget.

Still got my pull ups!

Friday's WOD was a nice little chipper: 30 hand release push ups (incline PUs on the barbell for me), 20 squat cleans (95# Rx - I did 55), 30 pull ups, 20 jerks, 30 toes to bar, 20 clean and jerks, 25 minute cap.  I figured 30 pull ups in a row was too many, so I did 15 and then another 15 instead of the toes to bar.  I warmed up 65# on the barbell, but it felt kind of heavy, so I went with 55.  It ended up feeling pretty easy and I was able to cycle a lot of the movements.  The pull ups were the hardest part of the workout, I'm honestly not really sure how I'm still getting up there lol, but they actually hurt my hands more than anything.  My fingers have been aching, apparently carpal tunnel syndrome is common in pregnancy, so gripping the bar is more difficult in general.  I finished in 19:30.

Friday night we had a nice little date night out at Bonefish Grill.  We had a $50 gift card and a free entree, so it was very economical.  We split their famous bang bang shrimp appetizer, each got yummy seafood entrees (twin lobster tails for me!), and Dave convinced me to share the coconut pie for dessert.  Even with some drinks for Dave our bill came out to $18!

On Saturday Dave got up and took Carmela for a nice long walk and let me sleep in.  He's been so awesome with that on the weekends and apparently I really needed it, because I woke up at 10:15 after 10+ hours of sleep.  In the afternoon I attended a baby shower for Laura, a friend from the gym who is due 2 weeks after me.  It was great to celebrate her and get lots of post birth advice from the other mamas there.

Sunday we had our fantasy draft, so I stuffed my face with pizza and faked more than a few people out with my delicious rootbeer.

I'm the only girl in my fantasy league and everything felt like business as usual for the afternoon, like I was just one of the guys... until I rolled my ankle taking a step down out of the house and I went down!  Thankfully I fell straight to my butt.  My friends gathered around me in a panic... worried about the 35 week pregnant lady that just bit it!  I was a little worked up, my ankle hurt and I had tears in my eyes, but I insisted I was fine and was up and walking around with no issues except for a my ankle feeling pretty sore.  I never felt anything in my belly, no cramping or weird sensations, and my ankle felt fine the next day, but all I could think of was my OB telling me to avoid falling risks.  Apparently I can CrossFit, but taking one step down is too much!  Thankfully my ankle felt totally fine when I woke up the next morning.

I switched up my gym schedule this week and hit the gym on Tuesday morning.  The strength portion was build to a heavy single strict press and push press (aka strict press + dip with your legs).  I got to 85# on my strict press, which is pretty close to my max, so I was impressed with myself.  I did 105# for my push press and it was pretty easy.  The WOD was a bunch of burpee box jumps and double unders, so I decided to do Monday's workout.

I went with 65# and the first few rounds were super easy.  But then it got hard!  The squats were definitely the hardest part for me and I just got winded in general.  I made it through the 10 rounds and then the 11th (4 reps for each) and 12th (5 reps) and then made it through 6 cleans, 6 squats, and 3 jerks to finish.  I was totally spent.  My pelvis felt kind of sore for the rest of the day, so I'm thinking it may be time to back off of weighted squats.

Tuesday night Dave took me out for a fancy birthday dinner at the Kimberton Inn, which is where we had our rehearsal dinner.  The meal was absolutely delicious and the service was outstanding as well.  I started with the lobster bisque and Dave got the seared sirloin scalloppine.  Both were very rich and melted in your mouth.  For our entrees Dave got the boneless duck breast and duck leg confit, the breast was so tender and moist, and I went with the bourbon-molasses glazed organic king salmon fillet, which was really unique and cooked perfectly.  Dave said it's the first salmon he's actually liked haha!  For dessert we split the double chocolate torte.  It was a wonderful birthday treat.

On Wednesday we did a maternity shoot in Valley Forge with our friend Megan!  I was a little nervous beforehand since I'm feeling pretty large these days.  I was worried I was going to get the pics back and hate all of them because of my big fat face lol.  But the shoot was great!  It was a little awkward at first, but over the hour both Dave and I got more comfortable and she got some gorgeous shots.  I'm going to post a bunch of them later, but here's a teaser :)

Other random week 35 stuff:
  • I'm finally starting to feel pretty uncomfortable.  My pelvis is aching (yes baby I feel your head), it's really hard to roll over and get out of bed, and forget bending over.  I guess I can't be too sad that I'm finally struggling at 35 weeks.
  • My friend Jes got me this a few weeks ago and I totally forgot to post it, but I had to share!
  •  The dog thinks my pillow fort is for her.  She's always trying to steal my snoogle!
Who me?

Less than a month left... except I'll probably go a week over my due date lol.  We shall see!

Fifteen Point Two

Another week, another Open Workout!  15.2 was a repeat of 14.2 from last year, but between the PE (the 8 hour exam I took in April) and our wedding, the open was just too much so I didn't participate.

I definitely don't have chest-to-bar pull-ups, so it was a no brainer for me to do this one scaled!

Unlike last week, I didn't have any anxiety going into this workout.  My pull-ups have been getting really strong lately.  The scaled division was also a lighter overhead squat (for women 45 lbs instead of 65 lbs) and less reps per round (start at 6 vs 10).  The only thing I was mildly concerned about was that I had already torn my hand earlier in the week doing pull-ups, so I figured I was probably just going to bleed everywhere.  Fortunately my friend Jeremy had a similar situation and he taped me up!  It still hurt throughout the pull-ups, but it was so much better than it could have been.

I finished the first round of work with over a minute of rest before the next time slot.  The next 3 minutes were a little harder, but I still had some rest before the 6 minute mark.  In the 10 rep section I was feeling pretty winded.  I wasn't sure I was going to finish before the 9 minute mark, but I whipped out those last 10 pull-ups and finished just in time... just in time to start the next round!  This was definitely going to be my last round, so I knew I only had to endure 3 more minutes.

Shout out to Coach Jules for always taking sweet pictures!  Maybe next
time she won't wait until the last round when everyone is dying ;)

I felt strong through the overhead squats.  The pull ups were a struggle, but everyone was cheering me on.  I finished the first set of 12 and had 1 minute left.  I did all 12 of my overhead squats without a break and ran over to do 2 more pull-ups before time ran out!  I did a total of 134 reps in 12 minutes!

This time last year I could barely do a pull-up and yesterday I did 62 of them!  Progress :)  Today is a lazy day!  We had a nice family brunch this morning and we don't have much on our agenda for the rest of the day except doggie snuggles, living room yoga, and a sushi date.

Happy weekend everyone!

My July Whole25: Days 22-25

I meant to post this on Friday and then totally forgot...

Day 22 - Monday 7/28/14
  • Breakfast: Cup of coffee and slice of the egg casserole
  • Lunch: Leftover Lemon Ginger Chicken from The 21 Day Sugar Detox Cookbook with Asian Cauliflower Fried Rice and a tasty peach
  • Dinner: Onions, peppers, mushrooms, and spinach sauteed in a pan with some shaved beef, some tomato paste, a splash of ACV, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder
  • Workout: 6 pm CrossFit - The strength portion was a back squat of 3 reps EMOM (every min on the min) for 8 minutes at 80% of your max.  I lifted 115 lbs.  The WOD was a killer:
    • 15 Hang Squat Cleans, 9 Box Jumps (20")
    • 12 HSC, 12 Box Jumps
    • 9 HSC, 15 Box Jumps
    • 12 min cap
I used 65 lbs for my squat cleans, finished in 7:41, and was wrecked.  This was definitely a sprint and I tried to keep my breaks to a minimum.  Holy moly the 6 pm class was crowded!  I guess I'm officially a fan of my 6 am classes.

  • Sleep: 7.25 hours
  • Thoughts: My simple dinner didn't come out great (too much tomato paste) and I'm really starting to get sick of cooking.

Day 23 - Tuesday 7/29/14
  • Breakfast: Cup of coffee and the last slice of the egg casserole
  • Snack: An apple pie Lara Bar and a small green apple
  • Lunch: Leftover Lamb Meatballs with Paleo Tzatziki Sauce with a side salad of spinach, a blend of shredded carrots, cabbage, and celery, grape tomatoes, and sliced almonds with EVOO, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, and Italian spices
  • Dinner: Chicken Spinach & Prosciutto Bundles (that I may or may not have made with non compliant bacon because I didn't have enough prosciutto...)
  • Snack: Pineapple, mango, coconut milk, and spinach smoothie
  • Workout: 6 am CrossFit - AMRAP in 15 minutes:
    • 400 m Run
    • 21 KB Swing
    • 12 Pull Ups
I completed 2 full rounds + the run + all 21 KB swings + 3 pull ups.  This was my first WOD with unassisted pull ups!  I have been working on pull ups for a while now and I got my first real one a few months ago, but I really can't string them together and putting them in a workout seemed impossible.  Doing them with resistance bands just isn't the same though, since CrossFit pull ups involve kipping (aka swinging your legs and popping your hips for momentum), and the resistance band definitely gets in the way.  I can't say they were the best pull ups in the world, but I was excited about them!
  • Sleep: 7 hours
  • Thoughts: Can't believe I went to the gym last night and this morning.  I feel like I was pretty hungry throughout the day and I guess that probably had something to do with it.

Day 24 - Wednesday 7/30/14
  • Breakfast: Coffee and pineapple, mango, coconut milk, and spinach smoothie
  • Snack: A small green apple
  • Lunch: Lunch out in the city with some coworkers after a meeting, coffee and a skillet with hot italian sausage, bacon, long hots, broccoli rabe, potatoes, and some sharp provolone.
  • Dinner: Coffee and a banana bread Lara Bar, by the time I got home from cheerleading it was 9:30, I had a headache, and I just went to bed.  I honestly wasn't really hungry all night, but I felt like crap by the time I went to bed, so it could've been lack of food, too much coffee, or a combo of both.
  • Workout: Worked out with the cheer girls that I coach.
  • Sleep: 7 hours
  • Thoughts: I have a coffee problem!  I've just been chugging it down all day lately and I need to pull back.

Day 25 - Thursday 7/31/14
  • Breakfast: Coffee, 2 hard boiled eggs, and an orange
  • Lunch: Chicken Spinach & Prosciutto Bundles
  • Snack: A bowl of pineapple
  • Snack: A small green apple, a Mystic Mango Kombucha, and some strawberries
  • Dinner: 3 pieces of grilled chicken (at 9:30 pm)
  • Workout: 6 am CrossFit - This one was a doozy:
    • 1000 m Row
    • 9 Shoulders to Overhead
    • 80 Double Unders (since my dubs suck, I did as many attempts as I could in 3 minutes, I got to 42 with 1-2 singles in between each one)
    • 7 Lunges with Bar in Front Rack (7 each leg)
    • 60 Sit Ups
    • 5 Thrusters (squat bar and then press overhead)
    • 400 m Run
    • 3 Overhead Squats
    • 20 Bar Over Burpees
    • 1 Bear Complex (power clean bar, front squat, press overhead, put on back, back squat, press overhead, throw bar down in victory :D)
When I looked this one up on the website the night before, I was like are you kidding me?!  It just seemed like a lot.  And nobody likes burpees at the end of the workout, especially when you have to jump over your barbell.  I racked up 65 lbs and finished in 19:00!  I felt like I really killed it on those burpees that I was especially dreading.  My coach was on my case during them and it really helped!  I think that's one of the biggest reasons I like CrossFit, it brings me back to me team sport days, when I would push myself to impress my coach.  I will definitely go further and faster when someone (other than myself) is holding me accountable.
  • Sleep: 7 hours
  • Thoughts: Today really lacked veggies.  With cheerleading starting up, I'm really going to have to do a Sunday cook ahead, utilize my crockpot, and lean on Dave a bit to make sure we're eating healthy.

Thank God it's over!  This weekend was a busy one and I definitely owe you some results!  Sorry to keep you waiting.

How do you eat healthy when you're crazy busy?

CrossFit Catch Up

Now that we've been doing CrossFit for a few weeks, I'm starting to feel more comfortable with a lot of the exercises!  However, I'm still crazy sore after every single workout.  CrossFit is no joke, but I'm loving it!

Thursday, 5/2/13

Skill: Double Unders
Workout of the Day:  7 Minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible)
- 7 Kettlebell Swings (35,53)
- 7 Situps
- 14 Double Unders

I completed 3 rounds and I used a 26 lbs kettlebell.

Double unders are hard!  Class started with my coach asking me what kind of temper I have because apparently double unders piss people off!  It took me a few minutes of trying but I finally got my first one... and then ended up with the jump rope around my neck.  I don't even understand how that happened!  Let me tell you, jumping rope is a great workout.  Every time I do a WOD I just keep thinking, you really only need a few minutes to get in a good workout.  No one is too busy to jump rope for a few minutes!  My calves were killing me for days after this one.

Tuesday, 5/7/13

Workout of the Day: You will take at least two attempts to set maxes of the following:
- 400 M
- Pull-ups (scaling option use a band that you will at least get 10 options)
- Push ups
- Toes to Bar (if you can't do toes to bar, please do sit-ups)
- Double Unders
- Box Jump in 60 Seconds (18,24)

Here are my numbers:

The run kind of sucked.  If I'm running long distances, I will take my time, if I'm running a quick sprint I will go all out... 400 M is a long way to sprint.  I really didn't want to do the second one.

I did my pull ups with a big green resistance band.  They felt super easy in the beginning, but my arms were burning quickly.  I got 22 on my first try, but I got to 24 on my second try!  This was the only thing that I did better on the second time.  I realized I wasn't doing the kipping motion (pumping your legs for momentum) that everyone else was doing and that helped a lot.  I still need a lot of work on pull ups.  One day, I will do a pull up with no resistance band.

I was already dreading the push ups since I've been struggling with them since I corrected my form (arms close to body, chest to ground) and my arms felt like jello after the pull ups.  Only doing 12 seemed pretty sad, I know I have a lot of room for improvement here.

I hadn't worked on toes to bar before, but I thought I'd try it to see what I could do.  I got my toes up easily the first time, but my lack of technique left me swinging awkwardly at the bottom.  I got my toes up a second time but decided to do sit ups instead since I don't really know how to do toes to bar correctly yet.  I killed it with 75 sit ups!

Next was double unders.  I did 10 in a row my first try!  I was super pumped.

And finally box jumps... jumping 18" doesn't seem that hard, but doing it repeatedly for 60 seconds is another thing!  Nothing like almost missing to put a little pep in your step jump!

Thursday, 5/9/13

Workout of the Day: Father of the Bride Workout (since one of the member's daughter is getting married this week)

Partner Workout (Cause what Marriage isn't a Partnership)
  1. Getting to the Wedding - Row 800, 100 Double Unders (or 200 Singles)
  2. Walking Down the Aisle - 2 100 Meter Farmers Carry (25 pound plates each hand)
  3. Exchanging of The Rings -100 Ring Rows
  4. Listen to the Bells Ring - 100 Kettlebell Swings - I did 12 lbs
  5. Cleaning out after the Wedding - 100 Hang Cleans 65,95 - I did 35 lbs
  6. Getting the Heck out of There - 800 M Run
The coaches gave us our partners, so Dave and I were split up and paired with some more experienced people.  Each portion of the workout could be split however you wanted.  My partner and I ended up splitting everything in half (we both did 50 of each exercise) except I did a few more cleans since I was feeling strong and my partner had a lot more weight on his bar (he did the prescribed weight of 95 lbs).  I probably could've cleaned more weigh (definitely not the 65 lbs prescribed for women, but more than 35), but I wasn't really sure and 50 reps is quite a bit!  The ring rows (grab rings, lean back with feet on the floor, pull yourself up) were surprisingly hard!  We finished in 24:21!  And my arms hurt so bad!  I thought about going to the WOD after work today, but I decided it was probably a good idea to let my arms rest instead.

After the workout we all went to a ice cream place called Zwahlen's that specializes in rich homemade ice cream, specialty chocolates, and gourmet candy apples.  I felt like I had definitely earned the brownie sundae (with Twix ice cream!) that I crushed.  I wish I took some food porn pictures because it was glorious!  It was a cheat, but I'm glad I cheated with something delicious and special.

Mine was similar to the one on the left!  (Source)

After ice cream we headed over to Chickie's & Pete's, a sports bar that has a few locations around the Philly area.  I ordered a burger with bacon, fried onions, bbq sauce, lettuce, and tomato (no bun).  Despite our trip to Zwahlen's, a lot of the people from our gym also follow some version of Paleo.  The guy who sat next to me just started a strict self imposed diet.  He went home during the ice cream portion of the evening to eat a healthy home cooked dinner and then expressed his jealousy during dinner as he sipped water, the only thing he consumed at the bar.  I felt bad for him but could totally understand where he's coming from!  It's nice to gain some new friends with similar views on food and fitness!
